Craftsman Hardware | Saw Blade Body
The saw blade body, is ultimately the most important component of the saw. Regardless of what saw you use, the saw blade does all of the cutting, all of the time. A cordless circular saw, will struggle to turn a heavier blade, although a heavier blade, does perform to a higher degree of accuracy.
It is a balancing act, and there are many variables at play.
When dealing with diameter of saw blades, it is important to never exceed the dimensions set out by the manufacturers guidelines. The saw blade also must not be too small, that the machines guard, does not cover the entirity of the tooth of the saw blade.
The body width is important as it will determine two things. The stability of the blade, and the energy required to turn it.
As the wider a saw blade body, the more stable and resistant it is to destortion. The body width, will impact the performance of a saw. The wider a saw blade is, the physically heavier it is, and the more energy is required to turn it when cutting.
For example, you have a Cordless 165mm Circular Saw with a cutting depth of 55mm, and would typically use a low kerf blade to minimise energy required to prolong battery life and help it perform to a satisfactory level. Low kerf blades, do have a tendency to not be as durable as a thicker blade - that provide a higher amount of stability.
Increasing the saw blade from a 1.8mm kerf to a 2.2mm kerf, might make small difference to the performance, but, when going up to 2.8mm for that higher stability, then the saw will start to compromise cutting speed.
Troubleshooting time. Do you need to cut the full depth? If not, then consider going to a thicker kerf, with a lower diameter blade. The lower diameter blade, reduces the extra weight of the thicker saw blade body, meaning it theoretically should perform at a higher stability, at a similar performance to using the full diameter, lower kerf blade. This means that you still get your cutting quality and cutting speed results, without sacrificing your equipments battery lifespan.
