Craftsman Hardware | Saw Blade Gullet
The gullet is the rounded space, cut into the saw body, between the teeth. This space is designed to carry away waste, such as sawdust and chips; prevent the blade from clogging. The size of gullets on the saw blade is closely related to the feed-rate factor.
The gullet is necessary to help prevent blade overheating and burning of the material being cut. Without a laarge enough gullet, sawdust becomes trappes, sticking to the blade and increasing friction, producing excess heat.
Sawdust is a major factor of saw blades and requires attention. Saw blades which are used for both ripping and crosscuts, tend to accumulate too much sawdust in the saw kerf when ripping. This is due to the lower gullet size, which is often caused by a higher tooth count. Always choose a deep gullet profile for ripping which allows a place for the excess sawdust to be removed from the saw kerf, eliminating the overheating problem.
Altohugh saw blades are not rated by the size of their gullets, this is something that is easily visible when examining a blade. That is why we also include images of the exact specification blade on the Craftsman Harware website, so that you can see exactly what you are getting and help you make an informed choice.
Forget about the idea of one saw blade for all. That idea, is typically more expensive than one blade for a certain purpose. Investing in 5 to 6 blades, with a purpose, and understanding each blade, is generally going to be cheaper than replacing blades constantly when teeth are damaged or they burn up.
Your equipment will perform higher, last longer, and you will ultimately get a higher return on your investment and the cut quality will always remain to a high standard.
