Bolts

Importance of Indoor & Outdoor Bolts

Bolts are fundamental fasteners in construction and assembly, providing high load-bearing capacity and dependable structural support. They are used wherever components need to be clamped tightly together and remain secure under tension, shear, vibration, or dynamic loads.

Selecting the right bolt for the environment is critical. Indoor applications typically benefit from zinc-coated bolts that offer corrosion resistance in dry, controlled spaces, while outdoor installations demand materials such as A4 stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised finishes for long-term protection against rain, UV, and general weathering.

From mounting steel plates to joining timber frames and fixing machinery, correct bolt selection enhances performance, extends the life of the installation, and helps prevent failures caused by environmental degradation, loosening, or fatigue.

Bolt Types for Indoor & Outdoor Use

Our bolt range includes multiple head styles and strength grades to suit different materials, loads, and environments:

  • Hex Bolts: Versatile bolts with a six-sided head for use with spanners or sockets. Available in zinc-coated finishes for indoor use and in stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised options for outdoor and exposed environments.
  • Coach Bolts (Carriage Bolts): Bolts with a smooth, domed head and square neck that locks into timber to prevent spinning. Commonly used for timber-to-timber or timber-to-steel connections in framing, landscaping, and furniture.
  • Flanged Bolts: Bolts with an integrated flange under the head that acts like a built-in washer. This increases bearing area and load distribution, reducing the need for separate washers when securing plates, brackets, and frames.
  • Socket Head Bolts: Cylindrical heads with an internal hex drive, ideal for locations with limited clearance or where a flush, compact head is required — often used in machinery, equipment, and precision assemblies.
  • High-Tensile Bolts: High-strength bolts designed for structural applications where load, vibration resistance, and safety factors are critical. Commonly used in steelwork, heavy infrastructure, and high-load joints.

Applications

Craftsman Hardware bolts support a broad range of structural, industrial, and general-purpose fastening tasks:

  • Structural Steel Connections: Secure beams, columns, cleats, and plates in construction and fabrication projects using appropriate high-tensile or galvanised bolts.
  • Concrete Mounting: Fasten baseplates, machinery frames, and brackets to concrete foundations when used with suitable anchors or embedded inserts.
  • Timber Framing: Join timber sections for pergolas, decks, garden structures, and interior framing using coach bolts and hex bolts matched to the environment.
  • Outdoor Infrastructure: Use hot-dip galvanised or A4 stainless bolts for railings, signage, fencing, and fixtures exposed to the elements to maximise service life.
  • Mechanical Assembly: Secure machinery, plant, and production line components with socket head and high-tensile bolts where robust, repeatable fastening is required.

By pairing the right bolt type and finish with the environment and load, you can deliver installations that stay tight, resist corrosion, and perform reliably over the long term.
